The pagan Anglo-Saxons honoured their dead with burial mounds, hundreds of which are scattered across the length and breadth of England. The mound here is set high in an isolated field, not so far from the pretty (though presently somewhat waterlogged) tourist village of Bourton-on-the-Water.

I’d been previously to Deddington’s splendid foodfest market, where I had sampled the delights of very ‘unEnglish’ onion bhajis, deep-fried in a huge cauldron for me by a Moroccan smallholder. Recipe to come, I assure you – it was food for a king.

A GYPSY CARAVAN FOR SALE IN THE ENGLISH COTSWOLDS

Just before this on the way to the source, I’d spotted these gypsy caravans near Bibury, one of them for sale, and note it has solar panels!

The scene was deserted, except for an alert hound – so I didn’t go tooo close!

The source of the Thames

Hello! This year’s ‘project’ is to explore the River Thames, from its source not far from Cirencester in the beautiful Cotwolds, through Oxford and Oxfordshire, until it widens out into the wide river that flows through the centre of Britain’s capital city, London.

East of London, the Thames widens out until it ends at Southend-on-Sea. Here a large marker stone on the beach says officially that the Thames ends here, beyond which the water is the North Sea.

I’ve done bits and pieces of the Thames over the years, but never yet “from source to muddy sea”.

Tomorrow I’ll be making a start by finding the source, and I do hope you’ll return from time to time to see how my adventure is progressing.
